Smart Film offers versatile, energy-saving options
UniOptix Technologies has unveiled Smart Film, a versatile glass-lamination technology that provides potential energy-saving solutions for residential and commercial buildings. Smart Film is an opto-electrical film that can be laminated directly onto the surface of glass, and insulates ultraviolet and infrared rays almost entirely, lowering indoor temperature and reducing power consumption from air-conditioners. In modern buildings where ‘glass walls’ are common, heat indoors is generated from visible light (44%), ultraviolet rays (3%) and infrared rays (53%), according to UniOptix, the product’s sole distributor in Malaysia. Smart Film’s versatility lies in its ability to switch between transparency and translucency with a flick of the switch. When switched on, the opto-electrical film is transparent and allows for natural lighting indoors. When turned off, it turns opaque, giving privacy to occupants and allowing for special technical applications for commercial purposes. Smart Film acts as an ‘electronic curtain’ for glass walls, so owners of modern and contemporary homes can do away with traditional curtains. Home owners can switch on the film to let in a healthy stream of morning sunlight, and when it gets too hot, Smart Film can be switched off to block out the light. This is a convenient and easy way to control light and heat in households while reducing energy consumption. In offices, see-through conference and meeting rooms can provide a spacious feel to the workplace, while the film can be switched off for more privacy. With the opaque wall, the glass can be transformed into a projection screen, suitable for business presentations. Smart Film can also be extended for revenue-generating opportunities, as shopping malls, commercial buildings and retail outlets can project advertisements on the glass façade, entrances and display windows. “This is the only building material that allows you to get return on investment and a regular stream of income to offset property rental,” said Ng Kok Ton, Business Development and Sales Manager. |
